A private family commission, ‘S’ crest is the full expression of a family with character, a sense of place, and a sense of fun. From research, discussions, and in-depth exploratory work, the project culminated in commissioning illustrator Chris Mitchell to take the finished iteration of the crest to the highest level.
Background
We were commissioned to create a crest, or coat of arms, to capture the qualities and interests of the family. Key elements included an expression of the father and mother in the family, represented by the elephant and wild boar characters. A love of wine, represented by grapes. Forests and mountains, and ivy - a favoured decorative element family property.
From an number of explored shapes, the flamboyant letter ‘S’ was selected as the basis for the crest.
Research
Naturally, a number of structures and styles were explored. (Say more about this)
It was critical that the diverse elements worked in harmony with each other. One of the biggest challenges was to ensure the crest maintained a sense of traditional origins, but a contemporary execution.
The final crest has a high level of detail and finish, and exists as a vector file, allowing great reproduction in applications such as 3D signage and fine printing.

Compostion
Exhausive research was carried out to combine the diverse elements in a number of ways. Assisted by illustrator Peter Mundee, we were able to find ways to combine elements with natural harmony and resolve the drawing challenges of the elephant and the boar.
